self-care is an act of self-love
Self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity!
With everything going on in your life, it's easy to put yourself last on the list of priorities. As a woman of color, in particular, you may often find yourselves juggling multiple responsibilities, from family and career to social and community commitments. It’s commendable to be dedicated to your loved ones and communities and society conditions us to place everything before yourself. HOWEVER, it's equally vital that YOU prioritize YOURSELF!!
Self-care isn't selfish; it's self-preservation.
The pressure to be strong, resilient, and self-sacrificing will wear you down mentally and physically, comprising your overall well-being. Neglecting your own needs as you strive to meet these expectations leads to exhaustion, overwhelm, and burnout.
Just what is self-care?
It goes beyond massages, mani/pedi’s, and facials. Self- care is the component of self-love where you literally take care of self. What you need can change from season to season and situation to situation. Below are some categories that you can reflect upon and prioritize on your self-care journey.
Mental Health-The daily stresses of life can accumulate, leading to burnout, anxiety, and depression. Prioritizing self-care means taking the time to address your mental health needs, whether through therapy, meditation, or simply allowing yourself moments of peace, rest, and solitude.
Physical Well-Being- Neglecting your body can result in chronic health issues that are preventable, reversible, and/or managable. Proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are essential components of self-care. By taking care of your body empowers yo to live a healthier, more fulfilling life.
Fulfilling Relationships- Meaningful and reciprocal friendships are a pillar of self-care for women of color. These relationships provide emotional support, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Cultivating deep friendships allows you to share your story and feel seen, heard, and valued.
I want to stress that self-care is crucial for women of color and cultivating deep and meaningful friendships plays an integral role in this journey.
The Power of Friendship (an often overlooked component in self-care)
Women of color often share unique life experiences and building friendships with others who understand these experiences can be validating and comforting. It creates a safe space for open dialogue and shared stories. Meaningful friendships provide a source of emotional support and can significantly reduce stress. Laughter, conversation, and shared activities all contribute to a sense of relaxation and connection that can be therapeutic.
Cultivating a Self-Care Practice
Set Boundaries: Learn to say "no" when necessary and establish boundaries that protect your time and energy.
Prioritize Sleep: Aim for a consistent sleep schedule to ensure you're well-rested and ready to tackle each day.
Invest in Your Passions: Dedicate time to activities you're passionate about, whether it's a hobby, art, or a particular interest.
Seek Professional Help: Don't hesitate to reach out to therapists, counselors, or coaches if you're struggling and need additional help.
Cultivate Friendships: Invest in building and maintaining deep, meaningful friendships with people who uplift and support you.
Women of color are often seen as pillars of strength, expected to carry the weight of our families, communities, and careers on their shoulders. While it's admirable to be strong, it's equally essential to remember that strength doesn't mean sacrificing our own well-being.
Remember, your well-being matters, and you deserve the love, care, and support that you so readily give to others. In taking care of yourself, you not only improve your own health and happiness but also become a beacon of strength and inspiration for those around you.
